Fair
Trade Wine
Although no universally accepted definition of fair
trade exists, fair trade labeling organizations most
commonly refer to a definition developed by FINE, an
informal association of four international fair
trade networks (Fairtrade Labelling Organizations
International, World Fair Trade Organization,
Network of European Worldshops and European Fair
Trade Association): fair trade is a trading
partnership, based on dialogue, transparency and
respect, that seeks greater equity in
international trade. It contributes to
sustainable development by offering better trading
conditions to, and securing the rights of,
marginalized producers and workers. Fair trade
organizations, backed by consumers, are engaged
actively in supporting producers, awareness raising
and in campaigning for changes in the rules and
practice of conventional international trade. But,
fair trade begins in the home markets.
When you
buy wine made in Ontario from a small Ontario
winery, you are making a fair trade purchase,
supporting a local producer who has marginalized
access to markets, and who will pass your purchasing
dollar along to local staff and suppliers. You will
be buying directly from the producer. This is the
essence of fair trade.

| {Click for technical details} Harwood's first Cabernet varietal! |
"Cab Sauv" is arguably the most popular wine in North America. Harwood's has a slightly herbaceous bell-pepperiness, with a dark red fruit palate. There’s a hint of mint, and a special mouth freshness that seems to be related to eucalyptus. But the palate is not at all acidic. The nose is a treat of cedar and violets with a bit of cigar box. Pairs with beef, lamb, large mushroom dishes, penne’s, and spicy tomato based pastas. We went lighter on the oak since the complexity was so well-defined. This Cabernet Sauvignon is big, bold, and very flavourful.
e David O'Conner: "That's some powerful wine." |

| {Click for technical details} The style is Marquesa! The name is Marquesa! |
A new wine style from Harwood. The palate says Port in no uncertain terms. A fortified wine. Outrageously flavourful because it's crafted from the Marquette grape, the new bright star in northern vineyards. Marquette is also auspicious for lighter table wines, very much like Pinot on the palate, but we decided to use its super ripe flavours and higher sugar at harvest time to render it as a delightful competitor to Port wine. Take Harwood's taste-test: a small amount of fine Port in one glass, and a small amount of Marquesa in another. We'd like to know what you think. e @Ontario_Wines / Rick Bates: "Wife & I enjoyed '10 Marquesa from @SunnyHarwoodPEC yesterday. Port style fortified wine using Marquette grape REALLY enjoyed it 5 stars." e David O'Conner: "Wonderful Port style wine...a warm mouthful of black cherry and spiced honey...a touch of heat at the end...a perfect after-dinner beverage beside a cozy fire." e Rick VanSickle: "A highly unusual treat with an intoxicating nose of sweet raisin, currants, lavish spice, chocolate and cassis. It’s a touch hot on the palate but delivers a wonderfully intense experience with rich dark fruits, sweet spices and roasted nut flavours.. 89 Points!" |

| Pinot Noir 2009 New Release! |

{Click for technical details} A classic French-style Pinot Noir. Bronze Medallion Canadian Wine Awards 2011 (Wine Access Magazine) |
An outstanding example of what Prince Edward County Pinot Noir can be. There's a wonderful chocolaty, peppery nose, and a very complex palate of ripe cherry, hints of mint and mushroom, and faint but persistent licorice. Made in the French style, but very Californian in its overall profile. Winemaker Lauren Horlock has drawn the best from three different types of oak barrels (French, Prince Edward County, and American) to create a perfectly structured wine. Although the tannins make it a good candidate for your aging cellar, this Pinot is absolutely ready to enjoy now. We suggest decanting for at least an hour in a container providing a large exposed surface area. The hard part will be waiting an hour. e Rick VanSickle: "An expressive nose of black cherry, cassis, bramble, spice and vanilla. It’s earthy and complex on the palate with red fruit flavours and loam mingling with County minerality through the finish. 88 Points!" |

| {Click for technical details} Full-bodied. A smooth, yet lively finish. |
| Pinot Gris has been a remarkable success story for Harwood. Vintage after vintage, award after award. Then, all at once in the month of September, an unexpected and overwhelming demand completely exhausted our remaining 2009 vintage in just a few days. Now, we're proud to introduce you to the 2010 vintage, with all its character and charm. We picked this vintage carefully, by hand, and didn't produce as much from it as in other years because of some hail damage and losses to the birds (who love it too.) The fruit we did press was outstanding, though. Lovely quality, but we just don't have the quantity we had in 2009. We have a little less than 200-cases as of September 25th. We're not sure if this will be available past Christmas. If not, we'll be releasing our 2011 Pinot Gris as early as possible in 2012...maybe March. |

| Gewürztraminer 2010 New Release! (Hover for picture) |

| {Click for technical details} Harwood's Gewürztraminer legend continues. |
In 2009, we raised one of the finest vintages of this grape we've ever seen in the county. Yes, our 2008 Gewürztraminer received quite a bit of applause, and 2009 cemented Harwood's reputation for dramatic Gewürz. Our 2010 palate is pronounced and very typically Gewürztraminer with a floral and lyche nose. But, Terence Van Rooyen says, "This is classic Gewürztraminer!" Terence is the Winemaker at Niagara College where he's teaching tomorrow's Winemakers. He's made a few thousand bottles of Gewürz himself. Gewürztraminer from the county is livelier than European wines, and we vinify ours dry
(not sweet) because we've discovered that . This is Harwood's signature style. e Lauren Simmons: "We loved the Gewurztraminer...uncharacteristically non-sweet wine with aromas and flavours of peach and lychee backed up by a measured level of spice." |

| Just Desserts 2009 ~Circle of Friends~ |
Order By Phone |
{Click for technical details} A fermentation recipe of three Heirloom grapes. Gold Medallion All Canadian Wine Championships 2011 Bronze Medallion Intervin 2010 Wine Awards |
This is our famous sweet Dessert Wine with a dry finish, not to be confused with ??? wine...and not at all like it, frankly. It's 2008 predecessor sold out over the winter, followed by an instant sell-out of the 2008 Réserve. It's a very sexy blend of La Crescent and Traminette, with Frontenac Gris, all picked at high Brix (sugar) levels. Unlike ??? wine. "Just Desserts" finishes quite dry even though it has a sweet palate of fresh 'berry shortcake' with the tiniest hint of citrus. Frankly, there's nothing quite like it. We believe that "Just Desserts" is the first wine made entirely of Heirloom grapes to ever win a gold medal at The All Canadian Wine Championships. e Michael Pinkus: "This sweet dessert wine delivers with sweet raspberry, cherry and cranberry on both nose and palate with great balancing acidity on the finish." |

| St. Laurent 2009 New Release! |
Order By Phone |
| {Click for technical details} Unique to Prince Edward County. |
St. Laurent is the genetic grandchild of Pinot Noir, that grew to great popularity in Austria and France. Ideally suited to Hillier soils and climate. A bright and lively nose of red current and raspberry, this full-bodied red wine has lovely black cherry flavours with a good clean crisp finish, and a smoky, leathery character. More soft tannins than the 2008 Vintage, but no harshness on the palate. This is without a doubt the finest St. Laurent we have ever made. It has been perfectly oaked.
A large group of interested wine-lovers has formed around St Laurent, and it's only available from The County as far as we've been able to ascertain. So it's not only delicious, it's a little bit of an "endangered species". e Gord Stimmell: "...the aromas show spicy black cherry, vanilla notes. The flavours yield black cherry, violets, mild cedar and a hint of candied fruit. A charmer. 89+ points!"
e David O'Conner: "It has evolved so well...a fine balance of fruit...a loyal following." e Rick VanSickle: The genetic grandchild of Pinot Noir and has become popular in Austria. Horlock feels it’s ideally suited to Hillier soils and climate. It shows black cherry, blackberry and perfumed cassis and spice on the nose. It’s a full-bodied red with lush wild berries on the palate, spice and smoky notes through the finish, 85 Points!" |
